Synthetic leather has improved significantly. Modern polyurethane and PVC materials are far more convincing than the cracked faux leather of a decade ago, and manufacturers have become skilled at mimicking genuine hide. That makes knowing how to spot fake leather more important than ever before spending money on a bag, wallet, or piece of furniture.
Four tests separate real leather from synthetic, and no single one is foolproof. Run all of them. For guaranteed quality, buy genuine leather bags from a retailer that is transparent about materials.
Understanding Leather Material Classifications
Before running any physical tests, the label is the first and fastest check. The specific words used matter significantly.
Full-grain leather is the highest grade, cut from the outermost layer of the hide with the natural grain intact. It is the most durable grade, develops the richest patina, and is the standard GM leather works with exclusively. Top-grain leather is the second grade, buffed to remove surface imperfections and often lightly coated. It is still genuine leather, but it sits below full grain in quality and is not the standard used here.
"Genuine leather" is the label that trips most buyers. It is technically real leather, but it is made from the lower hide layers left after full-grain and top-grain are split off. A product labelled only as genuine leather is not the quality reassurance it sounds like.
Real vs. polyurethane leather that NZ buyers need to understand: a label reading "man-made material" means the product is synthetic, most likely PVC or polyurethane. These are marketed as vegan leather, pleather, and leatherette.
If a product has no material label, assume it is synthetic. Legitimate leather goods makers do not stay silent about what they sell.

Once the label has been checked, a physical inspection further narrows the certainty.
Examining Pore Patterns, Grain Imperfections, and Edge Construction
Real leather is a natural material. Slight variation in pore size, occasional healed scars, and irregularity in the grain are signs of genuine hide.
Top-grain leather identification relies on this variation: no two hides are identical. Synthetic leather grain is stamped onto a plastic sheet. Scan a larger surface panel and look for a repeating texture pattern.
If the grain repeats at consistent intervals, the material is not genuine. Cut edges are also telling: genuine leather shows a fibrous, layered structure; synthetic edges are smooth and plastic-like.
The Tactile Touch Test: Warmth, Flexibility, and Crease Reactions
Press a thumb into the surface. Real leather wrinkles and stretches around the pressure point the way skin does, then settles back. Synthetic leather depresses and springs back like foam without wrinkling. Genuine leather also warms quickly to body temperature and has a slightly uneven texture. Synthetic feels cooler and unnaturally uniform across the surface.
Olfactory Differences: Distinct Natural Tanning Aromas vs. Chemical Plastics
Genuine leather has a distinctive, natural, organic scent from the tanning process. That smell has never been accurately replicated. Synthetic materials smell like plastic or chemicals, or have no real scent at all. The smell test is one of the most reliable checks available and requires no tools.
Functional Tests: Absorption, Flame, and Ageing Characteristics
Beyond visual and tactile checks, how a material responds to moisture and how it ages over time are 2 of the most definitive indicators available.
The Water Drop Moisture Absorption Test
Place a small drop of water on the surface and observe. Genuine leather furniture tests show consistent results: genuine leather gradually absorbs a small amount of moisture, darkening slightly at the point of contact as water permeates the hide fibres. Synthetic materials repel water entirely with no absorption, as the PU or PVC surface is non-porous. This test works reliably on bags, wallets, and upholstered furniture.
Patina Formation over Time vs. Peeling, Flaking, and Surface Cracking
Genuine leather develops a patina over time, becoming richer in character with use. Full-grain leather, in particular, becomes more attractive with age. Synthetic leather warning signs appear within a few years: PU and PVC materials begin to peel, crack, and flake as the coating separates from the backing substrate. This process is irreversible and cannot be treated or conditioned to stop.

No. Real leather retains the natural fibre structure of animal hide, allowing air and moisture vapour to move through it. Synthetic PU and PVC are non-porous plastic films that do not breathe, making genuine leather noticeably more comfortable in direct skin contact over extended periods.
